Audiology

Today, we learned about audiology and a guest came to speak to us. Mrs. Deanna Lowe, an audiologist with Premier Eye, Ear, Nose, and Throat, told us about the requirements of becoming an audiologist and that there is more than one occupation you could have in audiology. First, you have to have four years of undergrad school in communicative sciences or audiology. Second, you must go through a four-year graduation program, and that's not even an MD or PHD! Sometimes, people are able to combine audiology with an MD or PHD if they go to school long enough and are committed. Audiologists learn to set decibel standards, do audio tests, create technology to help with patients' hearing, and much more. There are different types of audiologists. There are hospital audiologists who perform hearing tests on newborns and hearing aid dealers are able to size and sell hearing aids to people who need them. There are people who specialize in communicating with audiologist patients called speech-language pathologists. We learned a lot today and we got to have some fun too! We got to try on hearing aids and get an ear pressure! First, Dr. Lowe checked the inside of our ears, then put a little piece of cotton attached to a string inside. Second, she got this green clay and put it into a dispenser and put it on the outside of our ears. It looked really silly! We waited about 5-7 minutes. Afterward, we got them taken out and compared the inside of our ears with our ear pressure models and learned that the inside of our ears is all different from each other! Overall, it was a fun learning experience to get a chance to learn about the study of hearing!
