Be Prepared!

I know when you read the title you thought of that song with the same name from Disney's The Lion King. Scar isn't the only one spreading the awareness of being prepared.

Ms. Erin Coker, RN, and Brittany Edmondson, RN, from the Mobile Health Department, came to speak to us today about emergency preparedness. In the emergency preparedness network (EPN), they respond to any type of disaster. It is federally funded and was founded after 9/11. It could be an active shooter, hurricane, or a bus crash. They are always ready for anything and run medical and mass-care shelters for those who need them. The Alabama Incident Management System (AIMS) tracks resources and transports patients to available shelters when the closest one is full. They perform full-scale exercises or are talked through practices to always be set and to provide the public with the help they need. The EPN suggests that citizens should have the right supplies to be prepared for emergencies, such as water, food, medications, clothes, batteries, flashlights, and a can opener. With these, they have a better chance of surviving any emergencies.

LaTisha McClendon also came to speak to us about preparedness, just a different type. She goes out in the community and educates people about epidemiology, the study of outbreak disease. The Epidemiology Laboratory Capacity 282 or ELC 282 spreads awareness of COVID and infectious diseases. The COVID pandemic is technically over, but it is coming back in small amounts and variants. The CDC recommends many ways to stop the spread. You should wear a mask when sick or around other people, wash your hands for 20 seconds, use alcohol-based hand sanitizer, and don't touch your face. Getting the COVID-19 vaccine is a good way to prevent getting sick. Although it does cause many side effects, it keeps you and others around you safe. If you are sick, it is a good idea to quarantine. That way others won't get sick.

With all of this advice, we are much more prepared for emergencies and disease outbreaks. If another pandemic or natural disaster occurs, we will be ready this time.
