Glow in the Dark

Today, Josh Green, a senior-year student in the Interventions class at our school, came to talk to us about radiology. Radiology is the branch of medicine that uses imaging technology to diagnose and treat disorders and medical conditions. There are multiple types of medical professionals who specialize in the field, like diagnostic radiologists who assess and diagnose images to figure out what disease or injury a patient has. Some doctors even use something called telehealth. Doctors can still talk to you and diagnose you through a robot when they are away. One type of radiology is interventional radiology, which includes biopsies, angioplasties, and vein punctures. We even learned the basics of an X-ray. They are painless tests to image structures of the body and use color coding to identify what’s in the image. For example, bones appear white, fractures appear black, and fat or muscle appear gray. Josh even showed us the glow-in-the-dark image on the back of the driver's license with a UV flashlight. It shows an emblem with Alabama on it. I was surprised! I didn't know they even had anything on the back of a driver's license! Afterward, we played a game, Girls versus Boys. Each team had to draw 3 injuries with a highlighter on a teammate’s body.  The highlighter is almost invisible. The other team has to use a UV light to find the 3 highlighter marks and the team that could find them the fastest wins. We lost by four seconds, but it was a really fun game! I hope that we can play more games in the future when guest speakers visit!
