The Catch

Updated: Dec 1, 2022

On October 15, Tyrone Prothro, a college football player who played for the University of Alabama, was in a game against Florida Gators. The team was planning for a touchdown but decided to go for a first down. One player was injured, so it was up to Prothro to win the game. He had gotten behind the Florida cornerback and jumped up to get the ball. The Gator cornerback made contact with Prothro while in the air, causing a painful landing. He had a complete tibia and fibula fracture. He was never able to play college football again. He underwent eleven surgeries, hoping that he could heal enough to be able to play again. The cast his leg was put in caused his foot to be slanted. He had many surgeries to try and fix this; the last surgery he has had was when they fixed up his ankle and cleared out some scar tissue. Prothro has healed and is able to be more active now. He likes to run and play flag football or basketball every now and then. Prothro now has a girlfriend and two-year old son and lives in Tuscaloosa. He is a sales advisor for DriveTime Car Sales. He enjoys his life now but wouldn't mind coaching football. He is an inspiration because he was injured and couldn't play college football again. He never thought he could move on with his life. Now, he is happy, has a family, and moved on to the next stage of life. He had a successful career with 25 catches and three touchdowns during the five games in 2005, and many awards. He won the Best Play at the 2006 ESPY Awards and the Pontiac Game Changing Award of the Year. Prothro's play was one of the most famous of all time. It even has a name: The Catch.
